The Search Continues After a Medical Helicopter Falls Into the Pacific

The Pacific Ocean was calm enough to conceal what had happened beneath its surface when a medical helicopter went down Wednesday evening off California's Catalina Island. A routine medical transport became a search-and-rescue operation, with two people dead, two others hospitalized and a fifth person still missing as authorities continued searching the waters.

The helicopter, carrying five people, crashed shortly after taking off from Catalina Island and entered the water several hundred yards offshore near Avalon, according to officials. The Los Angeles County Fire Department received the initial marine-rescue call at about 7:43 p.m. Wednesday.

Rescuers recovered four people from the water. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were taken to hospitals on the mainland. Officials said the two survivors who were hospitalized were in stable condition.

The fifth person remained missing Thursday as Coast Guard and local emergency personnel continued searching the surrounding waters. The Coast Guard described the operation as an active search-and-rescue mission rather than a recovery operation, indicating that crews were still working to locate the missing person.

Officials said the helicopter was apparently transporting a patient from Catalina Island to the mainland for additional medical care. The circumstances of the flight and the reason for the transport were still being examined as emergency agencies worked through the immediate response.

The crash occurred shortly after departure, making the location of the aircraft especially important to rescuers. The helicopter entered the Pacific several hundred yards offshore, leaving emergency crews to conduct the response on the water as well as coordinate medical transportation for the survivors.

The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to lead the investigation into the crash. Investigators will examine the aircraft, flight information, weather and other available evidence as they work to determine what happened before the helicopter entered the water. At this early stage, authorities had not announced a cause.

The crash has also brought attention to the particular challenges of medical transportation from an island community. Catalina Island is separated from mainland Southern California by the Pacific, meaning that medical evacuation can involve aircraft and maritime coordination when patients require treatment unavailable on the island. The incident demonstrated how quickly such a transport can become an emergency of its own.

For now, the immediate priority remains the missing passenger and the two people who survived the crash. Two others have died, while investigators prepare to examine the circumstances surrounding the flight. Until that work is complete, the cause of the crash remains unknown, and the search continues off Catalina Island.
