The Reports Are Complete, but the Grief Remains

There is a particular kind of waiting that follows a sudden death—not the waiting of uncertainty about what happened, but the waiting for confirmation, for the clinical language that will put a name to a loss. For the families of Aidan Hamilton and Robert Strang, two University of Mississippi students found dead on September 21, that waiting has now reached its end. The toxicology reports have been completed, though the findings remain private for now.

The two young men died in separate incidents on the same day, a coincidence that drew national attention and renewed concern about the substances circulating among college students. Hamilton, an 18-year-old freshman from Colorado, was found first. One hour later, police were dispatched to a house near campus and found Strang, a 20-year-old junior from Atlanta, dead in his room .

Court documents revealed that both students had similar packages of a product called "Smax, Pseudo-DHM" in their possession—described as a kratom-like or synthetic kratom substance sold at gas stations and tobacco shops . Kratom is a plant-derived substance that produces stimulant effects at lower doses and opioid-like effects at higher doses. The FDA has warned about concentrated kratom compounds, particularly those containing 7-hydroxymitragynine, which can pose serious health risks including dependence and withdrawal .

What the toxicology reports will ultimately determine is whether these substances played a role in the deaths. Officials have emphasized that finding a drug at a scene does not establish that someone consumed it or that it caused a death . The precise role of kratom or any other substance has not yet been determined.

The deaths have already produced arrests. Two clerks at Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer Store in Oxford—Yahya Mohamed Mosleh, 51, and Islam Mohamed, 18—face charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute . Police recovered more than 500 units of kratom during a search of the store, along with THC products and other suspected narcotics. Kratom has been prohibited in Oxford since 2019 .

Mississippi's Commissioner of Public Safety, Sean Tindell, noted that if the toxicology reports find fentanyl, a state law enacted in 2022 called Parker's Law allows charges to be pursued against anyone whose unlawful delivery of fentanyl results in a person's death . Attorney General Lynn Fitch said it is not yet known whether the arrests are connected to the deaths .

The families have asked for privacy as they mourn. The toxicology results, when released, will provide the clinical answer to what happened. They will not provide the answer to why—a question that will remain with those who knew Aidan Hamilton and Robert Strang long after the reports become public.
