The Radicalization That Began in a Student Dormitory

There is a particular disquiet that settles over a city when it learns that a plot so violent, so deliberate, so long in the making, was hatched in its own quiet streets. Melbourne, a city that prides itself on its livability and its calm, has been implicated this week in an alleged terror plot that began nearly a decade ago, in the dormitories and mosques and student life of a young man who had come to study engineering but, according to investigators, began a drift toward extremism that would culminate in an attempted suicide attack aboard a commercial airliner.

The man at the center of the investigation is Hamam al-Hammami, a 29-year-old Omani national who has been identified as the co-pilot of Flydubai Flight FZ1073. On September 30, 2026, the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was interrupted when al-Hammami allegedly attacked the captain with an emergency axe inside the cockpit, wounding him in the head, before being overpowered by a relief pilot, crew members, and passengers. The aircraft, carrying more than 170 passengers, was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi announced on Friday that investigators had traced al-Hammami’s radicalization to 2017, when he was studying in Melbourne. According to the prosecution’s findings, he “was influenced by takfiri ideology through reading extremist literature and following online content glorifying terrorist organisations and suicide attacks”. He also allegedly attended a mosque affiliated with RMIT University and came into contact with individuals associated with a center known as “My Centre,” managed by a Lebanese man known as “Abu Hamza,” who is said to have links to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Australian authorities responded quickly. The Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team—comprising the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police, and ASIO—confirmed it was “investigating the man’s links to Australia”. RMIT confirmed that al-Hammami had enrolled in an engineering program but left before completing his degree. His student visa was cancelled in 2019, according to UAE investigators.

Al-Hammami has allegedly confessed to acting alone and to pursuing a career in aviation specifically to carry out an attack inspired by the September 11 hijackings. Investigators say he used two earlier flights to Tel Aviv to familiarize himself with the route and airport before acting on the third. He worked for Oman Air from 2020 to 2024 but was reportedly moved to an administrative role due to concerns about his views, before being hired by Flydubai in January 2026.

The investigation remains ongoing. UAE prosecutors have said they are continuing to verify whether al-Hammami acted entirely alone and are examining evidence including recordings, technical reports, and possible connections to accomplices. Australian authorities have not confirmed that any local individual or institution was involved in the alleged plot.

For Melbourne, the claims raise uncomfortable questions about how a young man who arrived on a student visa in 2014 could have left, years later, with the kind of convictions that allegedly led him to attempt to crash a plane into an airport terminal. The answers, whatever they prove to be, will take time to emerge.
