The Fragile Thread of Power: How Energy Became a Battlefield Again

There are nights when cities seem to hold their breath—when the silence is not calm, but waiting. In Kyiv and across Ukraine, that silence was broken again by the distant hum of drones and the sharper echo of missiles, tracing lines across the dark sky before finding their mark. It is a pattern that has become painfully familiar, yet no less heavy with each return.

In the early hours of February 22, Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack combined hundreds of drones with dozens of missiles, striking multiple regions including Kyiv, Odesa, and central parts of the country.

The scale alone suggests intent beyond a single strike. Ukraine’s air force reported that nearly 300 drones and around 50 missiles were involved, many intercepted—but not all. Some reached their targets, hitting power systems, residential areas, and transport infrastructure.

In the Kyiv region, at least one person was killed and several others injured, with emergency crews pulling survivors from damaged buildings. Fires broke out across districts, leaving behind the familiar aftermath of shattered glass and darkened homes.

Energy facilities appeared to be a central focus. In Odesa, drone strikes sparked fires at critical infrastructure sites, later brought under control. Officials say such attacks are part of a broader strategy that has increasingly targeted Ukraine’s power grid—especially during winter months, when electricity becomes inseparable from basic survival.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, pointing to the cumulative scale of recent attacks—hundreds of drones, guided bombs, and missiles used within a single week. The message, while firm, carried a sense of repetition: a cycle of strikes, defenses, and appeals that continues without clear resolution.

Beyond the immediate damage, the strikes ripple outward. Reports indicate that large numbers of residents in Kyiv have faced power disruptions, underscoring how attacks on infrastructure extend beyond military objectives into daily civilian life.

Russia, for its part, maintains that such operations are aimed at weakening Ukraine’s military capacity by targeting infrastructure linked to defense. Ukraine counters that the repeated strikes on energy systems and urban areas amount to deliberate pressure on civilians.

The timing of the हमला—just days before the anniversary of the full-scale invasion—adds a quiet layer of symbolism. It is a reminder that the war, now measured in years rather than months, continues to move in cycles of escalation and response, with little space in between for pause.

In the end, the night’s events do not stand alone. They join a long sequence of similar moments—each one distinct in detail, yet familiar in shape. For those on the ground, the difference is not in strategy or scale, but in the simple question that follows each siren: what will remain when the morning comes.
