The First Strong Santa Ana Event, and the City That Prepares

In Southern California, wind is not merely weather. It is a character in the region's story—the Santa Ana winds that arrive in autumn, dry and restless, carrying the scent of desert and the memory of fire. This week, those winds returned with a force that prompted closures, parking bans, and a heightened alert across Los Angeles County.

The National Weather Service issued Red Flag Warnings for a significant portion of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, effective through 8 p.m. Saturday. Forecasters warned of northeast winds of 20 to 40 mph with gusts of 40 to 60 mph in wind-prone areas, and localized gusts reaching 60 to 70 mph in mountain passes. Humidity levels were expected to plunge between 5 and 15 percent, creating conditions capable of rapid fire spread .

The Los Angeles Fire Department implemented Red Flag parking restrictions in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, where parked vehicles can block access for emergency responders and trap residents during evacuations. Vehicles illegally parked in posted areas could be towed .

Road closures followed. Topanga Canyon Boulevard was closed to non-residents from 6 a.m. Thursday through 10 p.m. Friday between Pacific Coast Highway and Mulholland Drive. Old Topanga Canyon Road was also closed between Mulholland Highway and Topanga Canyon. Residents with valid access cards were permitted through .

Fire agencies increased staffing and pre-positioned equipment in high-risk areas including the San Fernando Valley, Santa Monica Mountains, Hollywood Hills, and West Los Angeles. Resources included wildland fire engines, strike teams, bulldozers, aircraft, and drones. "We are augmenting our staffing, positioning our people and pre-deploying equipment ahead of this weather so we are ready before the first call comes in," LAFD Chief Jaime Moore said .

Southern California Edison said approximately 245,000 customers were under consideration for Public Safety Power Shutoffs, including about 90,000 in Los Angeles County. The planned outages are meant to reduce the risk of electrical equipment sparking wildfires during strong winds .

Heat advisories were also in effect, with temperatures climbing into the 80s and 90s across the region. The combination of heat, low humidity, and gusty winds created what forecasters described as the first strong Santa Ana event of the season .

Residents were advised to charge devices, secure outdoor objects, review evacuation plans, and sign up for emergency alerts. Winds were expected to peak Friday before gradually diminishing over the weekend.
