The Fear Fades: Peanut Allergies Decline Among Children

For years, a tiny peanut carried enormous fear. Parents scoured snack labels, lunchrooms became zones of caution, and even the faintest trace of nut dust could send panic through classrooms. Yet a quiet transformation has been unfolding — one led not by avoidance, but by exposure.

A new study shows that peanut allergies in children have fallen sharply, marking one of the most remarkable public health reversals in decades. Researchers found that early introduction of peanut-based foods to infants — once considered risky — has dramatically reduced the number of children developing life-threatening allergies.

According to the study, rates of peanut allergy among children under 12 dropped by nearly 80% compared with levels recorded a decade ago. The findings validate recommendations made in recent years by pediatric associations, encouraging parents to introduce peanut-containing foods to babies as early as four to six months old, especially those at risk of allergies.

Experts believe the shift stems from what’s known as “immune training” — exposing the body to small, safe amounts of an allergen during infancy to build tolerance. This approach, born from the LEAP and EAT studies in the UK and US, has steadily reshaped medical guidance worldwide.

Health authorities now hail this decline as proof that allergy prevention doesn’t always mean avoidance. Instead, it may lie in gentle exposure — teaching the immune system to coexist, not to react.
