That excess calcium can damage muscle tissue directly, trigger enzymes that degrade muscle, and lead to the pain and weakness many patients describe.
About 10 % of people taking statins experience these muscle symptoms, known in research as statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS). The findings suggest that calcium leakage in muscle cells may be a major part of the explanation for those cases. While this mechanism may not account for all muscle complaints, the discovery helps clarify the biological process behind at least some instances of statin intolerance.
Because statins remain among the most widely used drugs in the world, affecting tens of millions of adults, understanding this side effect has important implications. Researchers say the new insight could pave the way for designing safer cholesterol-lowering drugs that retain their benefits without causing muscle harm. In early experiments, treatments that prevent calcium leakage appeared to protect muscle cells in laboratory models, pointing toward future options for people who struggle with statin-related muscle pain.
