Terror on the Highway: Sleeper Bus Burst into Flames While in Motion near Sagar

SHIVAMOGGA, Karnataka — Terror struck commuters late at night when a private sleeper bus caught fire while traveling near Mumbalu village in Sagar taluk, transforming a routine journey into a race against time.

The incident occurred as the bus was navigating its route, carrying dozens of passengers. Sparks and smoke were first detected coming from the vehicle's engine compartment while it was in motion. Within minutes, thick smoke filled the cabin, alerting the driver, who promptly pulled over onto the shoulder of the road and urged passengers to evacuate.

Panicked passengers scrambled to escape the vehicle, jumping from windows and rushing through the main exit as flames quickly swept through the sleeper berths. Local villagers from nearby Mumbalu rushed to the scene to assist in the rescue effort, helping pull stranded luggage and distressed travelers to safety.

Firefighters and emergency services were alerted immediately, arriving on site shortly after to battle the intense blaze. Though fire crews managed to douse the flames, the bus was reduced to a charred shell. Miraculously, quick action by the driver and alertness from the passengers prevented a major disaster, allowing everyone to evacuate before the fire fully engulfed the vehicle.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident, with preliminary reports pointing toward a short circuit in the electrical wiring system. Transport department officials have reiterated the necessity for rigorous routine maintenance and safety audits for long-distance sleeper buses operating on state highways.

Following the incident, transport activists and passenger safety groups across Karnataka have called for stricter enforcement of emergency exit accessibility and mandatory installation of automatic fire detection systems in all commercial long-distance vehicles. State officials announced that random inspections of private bus operators will be conducted over the coming weeks to ensure compliance with basic fire safety protocols and prevent similar near-catastrophes in the future.
