UMAN, UKRAINE — A night of air raid sirens ended in destruction after a Russian strike drone slammed into a multistory apartment building in Uman, sparking a blaze and injuring at least five residents. Emergency teams rushed to the scene as flames engulfed upper floors of the residential complex, marking another violent chapter in overnight nationwide aerial attacks targeting civilian areas and critical infrastructure.
The strike damaged neighboring structures, including a security post where emergency crews pulled a trapped man from under heavy rubble.
According to officials from the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, the attack occurred during a widespread wave of Russian drone maneuvers across central and western regions. The impact on the residential high-rise triggered fires that spread rapidly through several units, sending smoke pouring into the night air as residents scrambled to evacuate.
Emergency medical responders treated two individuals on site for minor injuries, while three others were rushed to local hospitals with moderate injuries.
"A fire broke out in a high-rise building in Uman after a drone fell. A nearby guardhouse was also destroyed, where firefighters successfully pulled a man alive from the rubble," confirmed Ihor Taburets, Head of the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration.
The high-rise strike in Uman was part of a larger, coordinated overnight drone campaign that hit several Ukrainian regions. In addition to the residential strike, falling debris ignited fires at commercial warehouses elsewhere in Uman and sparked an industrial fire in the regional capital of Cherkasy. Emergency headquarters have been established as search, rescue, and firefighting efforts continue. Local authorities urge residents across the region to remain cautious as air defense systems remain on high alert.
In response to the growing intensity of long-range aerial strikes, local civilian defense volunteers and humanitarian groups have mobilized to assist displaced families with emergency shelter, warm clothing, and essential provisions. Meanwhile, regional infrastructure crews are working around the clock to restore disrupted power lines and assess structural safety across the affected neighborhoods, aiming to prevent further collapses and secure the damaged tower before repair efforts can begin.
