Targeted Attack: Chief Minister Macacua Narrowly Escapes Convoy Ambush in Datu Odin Sinsuat

MAGUINDANAO DEL NORTE — Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Interim Chief Minister Abdulraof “Sammy Gambar” Macacua escaped unharmed after unidentified gunmen opened fire on his convoy on Saturday afternoon along the national highway in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.

The high-profile ambush occurred around 4:45 p.m. on August 15, 2026 as the Chief Minister’s motorcade was traveling toward Cotabato City following a political event.

According to official updates, the convoy was targeted shortly after leaving an assembly in Barangay Gambar, Kabuntalan, where Macacua had taken his oath as a member of the Bangsamoro Federalist Party (BFP) and assumed the role of party chairman and president.

Unidentified assailants positioned along the highway strafed the passing vehicles. Multiple rounds struck the Chief Minister’s armored vehicle, including hits on the driver's side, while two other armored security vehicles in the entourage were also peppered with bullets.

Despite the heavy barrage, the drivers pushed through the target zone without stopping, allowing the motorcade to reach safety at the Bangsamoro Government Center in Cotabato City.

Reports indicated that hours before the shooting, security forces had cleared roadside areas in nearby Barangay Payan following reports of suspected explosive devices. No injuries were reported among the Chief Minister's staff or security detail following the ambush.

The leadership of the Bangsamoro Federalist Party issued a statement strongly condemning the assault, characterizing the attack as a direct threat to regional stability, peace, and democratic processes.

Joint operations involving local law enforcement units and military forces are underway to secure the area and identify the perpetrators.

In the wake of the targeted violence, security protocols across the province have been elevated to high alert, with checkpoint presence doubled along key transport corridors connecting Cotabato City and neighboring municipalities. Local political leaders and civil society groups have voiced growing concern over the surge in political violence, urging national authorities to ensure a swift investigation and safeguard democratic freedoms ahead of upcoming regional governance transitions.
