Brisbane, Australia—Lifesavers and emergency paramedics pulled an unconscious swimmer from churning surf along the Queensland coast Sunday afternoon after a sudden rip current dragged him offshore, marking one confirmed fatality.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. local time along an unpatrolled stretch of coast roughly two kilometers north of the primary flagged swimming zone. Eyewitnesses reported seeing two bathers get caught in a deep sandbar trench before a high-pressure channel swept them past the outer wave break within seconds.
Volunteer surf lifesavers deployed an inflatable rescue boat and jet skis from a nearby patrol station to reach the victims. Crew members managed to pull one swimmer back to the craft, but the second individual submerged in deep water before rescuers could secure a harness line.
Rescue divers located the submerged bather five minutes later in three meters of water. Lifesavers performed CPR on the rescue vessel's deck while transporting the victim back to the main beach staging area.
Paramedics conducted advanced resuscitation efforts on the sand for over thirty minutes, but medical officers pronounced the 42-year-old man dead at the scene from drowning and cardiac arrest.
"The trench opened up very fast between the sandbanks, creating a fast-moving channel of water heading directly out into deep ocean," said regional surf lifesaving supervisor Mark Taylor. "Once a swimmer steps off the sandbar shelf into that current, it pulls them under in seconds."
Beach authorities posted red warning flags along a five-kilometer corridor and ordered remaining bathers out of the water as strong offshore winds continued to build dangerous wave swells throughout the afternoon.
State police officers remain on scene interviewing eyewitnesses and compiling telemetry on ocean conditions to complete the official coroner's report. Access paths to the unpatrolled sector remain closed until morning swell levels diminish.
