ROSARIO, Batangas, Philippines — A tragic incident unfolded after 14 individuals were swept away by powerful water currents while attempting to cross the Paninsingin Spillway in Barangay Colongan, Rosario, Batangas. Authorities have confirmed one fatality, 12 successful rescues, and an ongoing search operation for one missing person.
According to initial reports from the local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) and the Batangas Provincial Police Office, the group was attempting to cross the spillway on foot when water levels suddenly surged due to heavy rainfall upstream in the surrounding mountain areas.
Joint search, rescue, and retrieval operations were rapidly launched by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), municipal disaster responders, and local police teams following urgent distress calls from eyewitnesses.
Thanks to the immediate response from rescue personnel and local residents, 12 individuals were safely pulled from the raging waters and administered first aid before being transported to a nearby medical facility for observation and treatment.
"Rescue units were immediately deployed to the site to extract those trapped by the swelling current. Search and rescue operations remain active as teams work to locate the final missing victim," a spokesperson from the Batangas DRRMO confirmed.
Local officials and the Batangas provincial government have reiterated warnings urging residents and commuters to avoid crossing spillways, rivers, and low-lying concrete structures during severe weather or heavy downpours.
With the persistent threat of sudden flash floods and rising water levels across the region, authorities emphasize the critical importance of remaining vigilant and heeding local disaster management advisories to prevent future casualties.
Infrastructure experts and local community members have long flagged the Paninsingin Spillway as a high-risk crossing point during the monsoon season, calling for reinforced barriers, early-warning flood sensors, and a permanent elevated bridge structure. As climate-induced weather patterns bring increasingly unpredictable and intense rainfall to the province, provincial authorities face growing pressure to prioritize infrastructure upgrades that will safeguard rural transit corridors against sudden flash flooding.
