Spark to Flame: Abandoned EV Catches Fire on Flooded Bangkok Road

BANGKOK — An electric vehicle caught fire on a heavily waterlogged road in Bangkok after being abandoned in rising floodwaters, drawing widespread attention from local authorities and raising fresh concerns over battery safety during extreme weather events.

The incident occurred during evening rush hour following severe downpours that submerged several main arterial routes across the capital. According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle became stalled in knee-deep water. Shortly after the driver evacuated the stranded car, smoke began billowing from beneath the chassis, followed by rapid ignition and open flames.

Local firefighters and emergency crews responded to the scene, facing unique challenges due to the chemical nature of electric vehicle fires. Firefighters had to deploy specialized thermal imaging and sustained water streams to cool the high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack and prevent thermal runaway from spreading to adjacent stalled traffic.

Traffic was temporarily halted along the route while crews worked to isolate the vehicle, extinguish the blaze, and clear the charred wreckage. No injuries were reported, as the driver and passengers managed to escape the car prior to the fire breaking out.

While investigation into the precise cause of the fire is ongoing, experts note that deep submersion can lead to short circuits within the high-voltage battery system, particularly if floodwaters breach protective seals or physical underbody damage exists.

In light of the incident, municipal authorities and automotive safety experts issued a joint advisory urging drivers to avoid navigating flooded streets—especially in electric vehicles—and reminding motorists never to restart or remain inside a stalled car submerged in deep water.

As EV adoption continues to surge across Southeast Asia, the event highlights a growing infrastructure challenge for flood-prone metropolitan areas. Industry analysts emphasize that while modern electric vehicles are designed with waterproof battery enclosures rated for temporary submersion, prolonged exposure to severe urban flooding poses unforeseen risks. In response, city planners and transport officials are reviewing emergency response protocols and considering stricter safety standards for EV battery insulation to better withstand the region's intensifying monsoon seasons.
