Spanish wildfire victims burned in cars as roads turned into ‘death traps’

The fire approached homes and filled the air with smoke in the Los Gallardos area of Andalusia, where residents faced a critical choice: evacuate immediately or shelter in place as authorities recommended. Emergency officials said that while guidance was given and some safe routes were signaled, some people took an alternate path once flames and smoke made the situation confusing.

Authorities said that at least four victims were found dead in a car whose steering wheel position pointed to the likelihood of British nationality. Others were found after apparently leaving vehicles and trying to escape on foot along routes that were not part of the official evacuation plan. Officials described the rapid spread of the blaze and said the terrain—dry, rugged ground with steep areas—helped turn attempted escape routes into lethal bottlenecks.

The report also quotes emergency and regional leaders stressing that in major wildfire events, following the routes and instructions provided by authorities is essential, because unconfirmed or improvised paths can quickly become impassable or engulfed. As officials searched for missing people and worked to identify victims, relatives and community members sought information and shared details through local and international channels.
