There is a particular kind of speed that comes not from brute force, but from timing—the alignment of orbits and opportunity that allows a spacecraft to close a gap almost as soon as it opens. On October 1, SpaceX demonstrated that kind of speed, and in doing so, it claimed every spot on a list that no other American spacecraft can touch.

Crew Dragon Grace docked with the International Space Station at 7:05 p.m. ET on October 1, just 7 hours and 55 minutes after lifting off from Cape Canaveral. NASA confirmed the milestone, writing that the flight "marked the fastest launch-to-docking of a U.S. spacecraft in the history of the International Space Station" .

The previous U.S. record also belonged to SpaceX—the uncrewed CRS-31 cargo mission, which reached the station in a little over 12 hours in November 2024. The fastest crewed trip before last week was Crew-11, at 14 hours and 43 minutes. With Crew-13's arrival, SpaceX now owns all five of the fastest U.S. trips to the station: Crew-13, CRS-31, Crew-11, Axiom's Ax-2, and NASA's Crew-4. All five flew on Dragon .

The speed came from orbital mechanics rather than new hardware. SpaceX's Julianna Scheiman explained that the station "was in an opportune spot in space," allowing Dragon to begin closing the gap almost immediately after reaching orbit. "This is close to the fastest it could be," she said .

Crew-13 carried NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov. They are expected to spend about six months aboard the station conducting scientific research .

The record is a reminder of how far commercial spaceflight has come—and how much of that progress rests on a single company. Boeing's Starliner remains grounded, leaving Dragon as NASA's only operational ride to the station. The agency recently added three more Crew Dragon missions to SpaceX's contract in a $946 million modification . For now, the fastest way to the station is also the only way.
