South Africa, Scaffolding Fails At Industrial Project, Workers Buried, Emergency Crews Race Against Time Today

Johannesburg, South Africa— Concrete snapped just after 9 a.m. on October 29. A section of an industrial building under construction collapsed, dropping a slab and scaffolding onto the crew below. Dust shot up two stories. Then shouting.

Several workers were trapped. Site managers counted heads and came up short. Four, then five missing. Colleagues started digging with bare hands before heavy equipment arrived. A foreman said, "We heard them. We could hear them under there. We told them to stay still."

Rescue teams arrived within 30 minutes. Fire and rescue, disaster management, and private cranes from a nearby yard. They cut rebar with torches. They lifted panels inch by inch. One worker was pulled out alive after an hour, covered in cement dust, legs injured. He was loaded into an ambulance that could barely move for the crowd.

The site is a logistics warehouse on the edge of an industrial zone. It was nearing roof stage. Workers were pouring a second-floor deck when the formwork failed. Engineers on site pointed to a possible shoring failure, but no one would go on record yet. The structure was not yet certified.

By midday, two more men were freed. Both conscious. One had a crushed arm. A fourth remained pinned under a collapsed beam. Rescue dogs were brought in to narrow the search. Operators worked in silence when listening for voices.

Safety officers sealed the entire development. All work stopped. The Department of Employment and Labour said inspectors were dispatched. A spokesperson said, "We will check the plans, the permits, the compliance records. Someone must answer for the method used here."

Families gathered at the gate. Some were workers' wives. Some were just watching. An ambulance queue formed. A mobile clinic treated minor injuries. Concrete trucks scheduled to pour were turned away.

The builder has not released a statement beyond confirming the incident. The project owner said cooperation with authorities would be full. Workers told reporters off the record that shifts had been long, concrete pours rushed to meet a deadline.

As evening approached, rescue lights were set up. One worker was still unaccounted for under the rubble.
