Rotterdam, Netherlands— An elderly resident died after an early morning residential fire tore through a row house in Rotterdam on October 22, 2026.
The alarm came at 4:38 a.m. from the Bloemhof district. Neighbors heard a smoke detector, then saw smoke seeping from under the front door of a two-storey home. Flames appeared in the ground-floor living room minutes later. The entire street woke to sirens.
The house was occupied by an 82-year-old man who lived alone. His bedroom was on the first floor. Fire crews said smoke blocked the stairwell fast. The front windows were locked with old security bars. He could not get out.
Two fire engines and a ladder unit arrived within six minutes. Firefighters forced the door and pushed into zero visibility. Heat was intense on the ground floor. They found the man unconscious on the landing, overcome by smoke. He was carried out and resuscitated on the pavement, but did not survive.
“The house was full of smoke from top to bottom. We had to crawl. The victim was very close to the exit but the smoke was too thick,” said a Rotterdam-Rijnmond fire officer. Neighbors stood in nightclothes, some crying, watching paramedics work.
The fire was contained to the living room and hallway. The cause appears to be accidental, possibly an electrical heater left on overnight near a sofa. Investigators found no working smoke detector on the first floor. The one on the ground floor had no battery.
The municipality moved two neighboring families to temporary housing due to smoke damage. The street was closed until 8 a.m. for forensic examination. A victim support team stayed on site to speak with relatives.
Rotterdam has seen several fatal fires involving elderly residents living alone in older homes. The fire brigade has warned repeatedly about portable heaters and blocked escape routes.
Police have handed the case to the fire investigation unit. The house remains sealed. An autopsy will confirm cause of death, but smoke inhalation is presumed.
