Galway, Ireland— An elderly homeowner was left hospitalized with injuries after an armed home invasion in suburban Galway on October 22, 2026.
The raid happened at 9:15 p.m. in a bungalow estate in Knocknacarra, on the west side of the city. Three men wearing dark clothing and gloves forced the back door. The homeowner, an 83-year-old man living alone, was watching television in the living room. They demanded cash and threatened him with a crowbar and a knife.
The man tried to resist and was struck in the face and knocked to the floor. The intruders ransacked the bedroom and living room, taking about 600 euros, jewellery and a mobile phone, then fled in a dark car. The victim managed to crawl to a neighbor’s house 20 minutes later and raise the alarm.
Neighbors called Gardaí and ambulance. The man was found with facial injuries, bruising and a broken wrist, bleeding but conscious. He was taken to University Hospital Galway. Doctors said his injuries are serious but not life-threatening. He remains in hospital for observation, badly shaken.
“This was a despicable attack on a vulnerable elderly man in his own home. He was targeted because he lives alone and was seen going to the post office earlier,” said a Garda spokesman in Galway. “We are treating this as an aggravated burglary.”
Forensic officers sealed the house overnight. They took fingerprints from a smashed window, a discarded glove and the phone charger. CCTV from a neighboring house shows three figures entering the driveway at 9:12 p.m. and leaving three minutes later.
Residents in the estate, mostly elderly, said they are frightened. One woman said, “We lock doors at 6 p.m. now. We never had this before. He is a lovely quiet man.” Community Gardaí have increased patrols.
Gardaí have appealed for anyone who saw a dark saloon car driving fast from the estate around 9:20 p.m. to come forward. No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
The victim’s family has asked for privacy. Support services have been offered.
