Slovakia to Block EU Loan to Ukraine if Orban Loses Hungarian Election, Fico Says

In a recent statement, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico indicated that Slovakia would be prepared to block a proposed €90 billion loan from the European Union to Ukraine if Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party does not win the upcoming Hungarian elections. Fico made this declaration in a video posted on March 8, reflecting both national interests and regional tensions related to energy supplies.

The EU loan, intended to support Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict, has already faced delays due to Hungary’s objections concerning the Druzhba pipeline, which has halted the transit of Russian oil since late January following a missile strike. Hungary has leveraged the situation by blocking the loan until its oil supply needs are addressed.

Fico stated, "The main message will be that Slovakia is ready to take over the baton from Hungary if necessary." This comment highlights Slovakia's willingness to align with Hungary's previous stance, particularly relating to energy security and financial aid.

Fico plans to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on March 10 to discuss these issues further. He expressed a need for urgent negotiations regarding the Druzhba pipeline, emphasizing that Slovakia has obtained satellite data that suggests the pipeline is still operational.
