"I Thought We Were Going to Die": Kentucky Student Recounts Terrifying Moment Bus Flipped, Hospitalizing 14

MAGOFFIN COUNTY, Ky. — A routine afternoon ride home turned into a nightmare for dozens of elementary students when their school bus veered off a rural road and flipped onto its side, leaving 13 children and the driver hospitalized.

The crash occurred along a winding stretch of Route 40, a narrow two-lane highway flanked by steep embankments. According to eyewitnesses and preliminary state police reports, the bus drifted onto the soft shoulder before the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn and slide down a ravine before finally coming to a halt against a cluster of trees.

Trapped inside the overturned vehicle, young passengers faced moments of sheer panic as dust and debris filled the cabin. "Everything happened so fast," recalled one young survivor, a fifth-grader who escaped with minor cuts and bruises. "We heard a loud scrape, and suddenly the bus was tilting. Kids were screaming, backpacks were flying everywhere, and I just covered my head because I thought we were going to die."

First responders, volunteer firefighters, and neighboring residents rushed to the scene to pull frightened children through the bus's emergency roof hatches and rear exit. Emergency medical services transported 13 students and the adult driver to regional medical centers, where most were treated for minor injuries while a few required cares for more severe fractures.

Nearby, paramedics established an emergency triage station near the crash site to evaluate uninjured students before reuniting them with frantic parents who hurried to the area. Meanwhile, state troopers are conducting an ongoing investigation into the vehicle's mechanical records, road conditions, and onboard telemetry to determine whether mechanical failure, driver distraction, or physical road hazards caused the rollover.

School district officials have deployed grief counselors to local schools to support students, staff, and families as the tight-knit rural community recovers from the traumatic crash.
