Sixty-Eight Dead After High-Speed Train Collision In Toledo, Spanish Officials Launch Major Emergency Response

Toledo, Spain— Two high-speed trains collided outside Toledo on November 1, 2026, killing 68 people and injuring dozens more in one of the deadliest rail disasters in Spain in decades.

The crash happened on a double-track section south of the city. One train was heading toward Madrid. The other was leaving the capital. Officials said one train appeared to have crossed onto the opposite track. The impact derailed eight carriages.

Emergency calls flooded in at 4:12 p.m. local time. Firefighters found mangled steel, shattered windows, and passengers trapped between seats. The sound of metal cutting tools filled the field. Blood. Luggage scattered for hundreds of meters.

Civil Guard officers closed the line immediately. Renfe halted all high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia. Hospitals in Toledo, Ciudad Real and Madrid activated mass casualty protocols. Dozens of ambulances lined the access road.

"Our teams are working carriage by carriage. The priority is to extract the living, then identify the dead," an emergency coordination official said near the cordon. He said at least 45 people were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.

Rail infrastructure in Spain is heavily automated. The stretch near Toledo uses ETCS Level 2 signaling. Investigators will pull data recorders from both trains and the control center in Madrid. They want to know if a signal was missed, or if a switching error occurred.

Survivors described a sudden jolt and then darkness. One passenger said the train braked hard seconds before impact. Another said the carriage tipped and luggage fell from above. Rescue workers carried people out on backboards across the ballast.

Spain's Transport Ministry confirmed the death toll late Saturday. The Prime Minister's office said the government will declare three days of mourning. Opposition leaders called for a full parliamentary inquiry into rail maintenance budgets.

Prosecutors have opened a preliminary case. The rail network operator, Adif, said tracks in the area passed inspection last month. Renfe said both drivers were experienced and both are among the dead.

The wreckage will remain in place until investigators complete mapping. Cranes are staged nearby. The line will stay closed for at least 72 hours.
