Two Passengers Dead As Mudslide Hits Vehicle On Mountain Road, Philippines Officials Launch Rescue Operation

Baguio, Philippines— Two passengers died after a rain-induced mudslide engulfed their vehicle on a mountain road in the northern Philippines on November 1, 2026, blocking a key highway and stranding dozens of motorists.

The mudslide hit in the late afternoon. Heavy rain had soaked slopes above the road for two days. Soil and rocks slid down without warning. The vehicle, a van carrying local residents, was halfway through a curve when the debris hit. It was pushed off the lane and buried.

Highway patrol officers and Bureau of Fire Protection crews arrived within an hour. They found the van half-covered in mud. Volunteers dug with shovels. An excavator was brought in from a nearby construction site. Two bodies were recovered inside.

"Drivers were told to be cautious. The slope was already showing cracks. This section is known for slides," a Department of Public Works and Highways engineer said at the scene. He said crews had cleared smaller slides there earlier this week.

Mountain roads in Luzon are prone to mudslides during the rainy season. Deforestation, road cutting, and saturated soil increase the risk. The stretch where the incident occurred links Baguio to lowland provinces and carries heavy truck traffic.

The Philippine National Police closed the road in both directions. More than 50 vehicles were queued by evening. Some drivers turned back and took a longer route through mountain passes. Local officials opened a school as a temporary shelter for stranded passengers.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, PAGASA, said a low-pressure area is bringing continued rain to the Cordillera region. More mudslides are possible. The agency advised against non-essential mountain travel.

Families of the victims were notified late Saturday. Their names have not been released. The van operator said the vehicle passed safety inspection last month. Investigators will check if overloading or speed played any role.

Clearing operations continued overnight. Officials said the road will stay closed until the slope is stabilized and inspected.
