Silent Threats Amid Celebration: Experts Warn of Tuberculosis Risks

In Malaysia, the approach of festive gatherings and long-distance travel is being shadowed by concern over a rising tuberculosis (TB) outbreak. Health experts are urging travellers to take precautions, emphasizing that close contact in crowded spaces could accelerate transmission.

Authorities report 10 active TB clusters nationwide, with Johor among the most affected states, where 37 cases have been detected so far this year. The clusters have raised alarms as people prepare to move between cities and rural areas for celebrations. TB, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is an airborne infection that primarily affects the lungs but can spread through coughing or sneezing.

Medical professionals advise travellers to wear masks, particularly on public transport and in indoor spaces with poor ventilation. Those experiencing persistent coughs, fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss are encouraged to seek medical attention promptly and avoid unnecessary travel until cleared by a doctor.

Experts highlight that TB can spread silently, and festive travel creates opportunities for close interactions that increase risk. Measures such as ensuring well-ventilated spaces during gatherings and limiting prolonged close contact are recommended to reduce potential exposure. Authorities continue active screening and contact tracing within affected clusters to contain the outbreak.

The public is reminded that not all TB infections are infectious — only active pulmonary cases pose a transmission risk — but vigilance remains essential to protect both vulnerable individuals and the broader community.
