“Shadows in the School Hall: How a Plan Turned to Tragedy”

A winter morning in the courtroom can feel like an unwinding story—where light mingles with the gravity of outcomes yet to be spoken. On this occasion, judges, lawyers, and onlookers gathered, the murmurs of the city held at bay behind tall glass windows. In that space, beyond windswept streets and whispered concerns, a young man’s future was gently but firmly shaped by the words rendered within these walls. Justice, like a river seeking its course, followed the evidence laid before it, quietly carving consequence from deed.

On Monday, a 27‑year‑old man from Katwijk was sentenced to six years in prison following his conviction for trying to recruit teenagers to shoot an unnamed person in the legs, the court in The Hague ruled.

According to investigators, the defendant approached two youths, one 16 and one 19 years old, offering up to €2,000 and even the firearm itself as incentive to carry out the violent act. A third minor, then 15, acted as an intermediary, relaying instructions via social media.

The planned shooting never reached its intended moment. Police surveillance in Rotterdam on the night of February 3–4, 2025, thwarted the scheme, with officers present in the area prompting the group to abort their mission.

Tragedy still unfolded. The 16‑year‑old, who had taken the weapon and driven with a chauffeur arranged by the defendant, was later found with a gunshot wound to his body in a restroom at the Hofstad Lyceum in The Hague. Despite emergency medical response, the young teenager succumbed to his injuries on February 5, 2025. The court determined that he likely shot himself accidentally with the same weapon the day after the thwarted plan.

While the prosecutor had sought a five‑year sentence, the judge imposed a six‑year term, citing the seriousness of the attempted solicitation and the exploitation of vulnerable youth. The intended victim of the shooting remains unidentified in official court records.

In imposing the sentence, the court underscored both the danger inherent in the recruitment of minors for violent acts and the ripple of consequence that can echo far beyond a single poor choice. The six‑year prison term marks a moment of reckoning for the defendant and a reminder of the profound responsibility carried by those who stand at the intersection of influence and youth. Life, measured in years and the choices between them, continues to unfold beyond the courtroom doors.
