Scientists Report Potential Breakthrough in Search for Dark Matter

Scientists working with the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment have reported a possible clue in the search for dark matter. Using a xenon detector located about 1.6 kilometers underground in South Dakota, researchers observed a particle interaction that produced a faint flash of ultraviolet light and a nuclear recoil. The event appeared consistent with a hypothetical weakly interacting massive particle, or WIMP. However, scientists stressed that one event does not meet the statistical threshold for a discovery. Further observations and analysis are needed to rule out background events
