Scaffold Collapse Crushes Sidewalk In Brazil, Pedestrians Injured, Residential Construction Site Sealed After Incident

Sao Paulo, Brazil— A scaffold on a 12-story residential tower gave way just after noon and crashed onto a busy sidewalk, burying pedestrians under steel pipes, wooden planks, and netting.

The structure was on Rua Augusta, a high-traffic corridor with shops and cafes. Workers were applying facade plaster on the 8th floor when a tie anchor snapped, witnesses said. The scaffold swayed, then peeled off the building in one piece. It hit the sidewalk with a deafening clang.

Three pedestrians were trapped. One woman was pinned under a metal frame. Bystanders lifted debris before firefighters arrived. A cafe owner across the street said, "It was like an earthquake, dust everywhere, people screaming, then silence. We ran to pull them out."

Fire crews from two stations cut through the tangled scaffold with saws. They found a construction worker clinging to a ledge on the 7th floor, his harness the only thing holding him. He was rescued by rope team. Six people in total were taken to hospital, two in serious condition.

The building permit shows the project is a luxury residential conversion by a mid-size developer. The contractor had been cited in May for overloading scaffold platforms, according to city hall records. An inspector said the current scaffold had been modified to extend beyond approved limits to speed work.

Sao Paulo's municipal works department sealed the site immediately. Engineers will check whether the building's anchor points were drilled into weak masonry instead of structural concrete. That practice has caused three similar failures in the city since 2024.

The mayor's office said sidewalk protection galleries required by law were not fully installed. The gallery that was there collapsed under the weight. Pedestrians had no cover.

Construction in central Sao Paulo has surged, with tight deadlines and heavy use of subcontracted labor. Safety enforcement is stretched. Union reps say inspections happen only after accidents.

The street remained closed into the afternoon as crews removed hanging scaffold sections that threatened to fall. Investigators collected anchor bolts and photographs.

The injured remain under observation. No deaths have been confirmed.
