KYIV — A massive wave of Russian drone and missile strikes tore across multiple regions of Ukraine, killing at least eight people, injuring at least 60 others, and damaging critical energy infrastructure, leaving more than a million residents without electricity.
The strikes hit civilian areas, commercial hubs, and power generation facilities across several regions, including Kharkiv, Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Volyn, and Zaporizhzhia.
In the eastern city of Kharkiv, heavily targeted throughout the assault, local officials confirmed that attacks across three districts claimed the lives of a 71-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man, injuring 12 others.
The barrage caused extensive structural destruction in urban centers, direct hits damaging two major shopping centers. Emergency personnel and first responders were deployed immediately, working through debris to rescue survivors and stabilize affected civilian structures.
The primary objective of the synchronized assault was Ukraine’s already strained power grid. High-precision drone and missile strikes hit critical transmission nodes and generation units across eight provinces.
Grid operators reported widespread blackouts following the attacks, forcing state energy companies to implement emergency rolling power outages across the country. Immediate power disruptions left over one million households without electricity in Ukraine's central, eastern, and southern regions. To prevent a complete grid collapse and stabilize the supply, hourly blackout schedules and scheduled power rations were quickly put into effect in key cities, including Kyiv. Meanwhile, emergency repair teams and utility workers were dispatched immediately to begin critical repairs wherever local security conditions permitted access.
Ukrainian leaders condemned the strikes as a deliberate strategy to plunge the country into darkness and destabilize civilian life. Local authorities urged citizens to conserve energy while repair crews work around the clock.
International observers highlight that continued attacks on power infrastructure exacerbate human suffering and strain humanitarian aid efforts across Ukraine. Search and rescue operations remain active in impacted districts as emergency services continue assessing the full scope of damage.
