Russian Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich was reportedly shot and critically wounded near his home in Saratov Oblast, according to Russian media and Telegram channels. Ukraine accuses him of ordering the July 2024 missile strike on Kyiv’s Okhmatdyt children’s hospital, which killed two people and injured dozens. The attacker reportedly fled on a motorcycle, while Varpakhovich’s driver was also wounded. Russian investigators opened a case, but authorities had not publicly confirmed the general’s identity or motive behind the shooting itself.
