Russia released Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old American jailed after being accused of fighting for Ukraine, during Steve Witkoff’s meeting with Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg. Hubbard was detained in 2022 and sentenced in 2024 to nearly seven years in a penal colony. He denied the charges. President Donald Trump said Hubbard was on his way home and that no exchange was required. The Kremlin described the release as a humanitarian gesture. Witkoff praised Putin, prompting criticism from some U.S. lawmakers.
