Road Rage Bloodshed: Barangay Official Arrested After Shooting Truck Driver in Pampanga

CAMP OLIVAS, PAMPANGA — A hot-pursuit operation by regional law enforcement has led to the arrest of a 42-year-old village chief (barangay captain) from Lubao, Pampanga, less than 12 hours after he allegedly shot a cargo truck driver during a violent road rage confrontation in nearby Guagua.

The incident unfolded along the busy Jose Abad Santos Avenue (JASA) in Barangay San Antonio, Guagua, shattering the post-midnight calm.

According to a formal statement released by the Police Regional Office-Central Luzon (PRO-3), the violent altercation occurred at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Friday, July 17, 2026.

The friction began on the national highway when an argument flared up between the suspect, who was driving a Ford pickup truck, and a 28-year-old man operating a cargo truck. The verbal dispute rapidly deteriorated into physical violence when the pickup driver drew a firearm and fired at the truck driver.

The 28-year-old victim sustained a serious gunshot wound to his right leg. Responding emergency units and local police quickly attended to the wounded driver, who was seated at the scene before being rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate medical treatment.

Following the shooting, the assailant fled the scene. However, the escape was short-lived as local detectives immediately launched a comprehensive investigation. By reviewing area closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, conducting extensive vehicle tracing, and coordinating directly with the Lubao Municipal Police Station and adjacent municipal networks, authorities tracked down the suspect.

Before noon on the same Friday, tactical teams apprehended the 42-year-old barangay captain in Barangay Santa Maria, Lubao. During the arrest, police recovered a licensed firearm from the suspect's possession, which investigators believe was the weapon utilized in the highway assault. The firearm has been forwarded to crime laboratories for immediate forensic testing.

Criminal charges are currently being prepared against the village official, whose identity has been withheld by authorities in initial press briefings pending the formal filing of the case. PRO-3 Regional Director Brig. Gen. Jess Mendez commended the operational synergy that led to the rapid arrest, reaffirming the police force's stance on accountability.
