Raise a Glass, Then Think Again: Drinking Patterns That Stayed Past COVID

There was a time, not long ago, when a quiet clink of glasses at the end of the workday became a familiar backdrop to life under lockdown. The pandemic reshaped our routines, narrowing social worlds and widening our living rooms into offices, gyms, and — for some — nightly bars. What began as an occasional drink to unwind has, for many, become a pattern that has persisted long after pandemic restrictions faded.

New survey results suggest that the increase in alcohol use many of us saw during those uncertain years has not simply faded into memory. Researchers and health professionals point to data indicating that harmful alcohol use and related behaviors that spiked during the pandemic have remained elevated in regions like Ontario and beyond, even years after COVID‑19’s most disruptive phase.

In Ontario, a recent long‑running public health survey reported that although some measures of alcohol use have slightly declined from their pandemic peaks, they have not returned to pre‑pandemic levels. Indicators such as binge drinking remain relatively stable, suggesting that for many adults, the habits formed in 2020 and 2021 have endured.

This isn’t just a Canadian story. A major U.S. study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that alcohol use grew sharply between 2018 and 2020 and remained elevated into 2022 — well after the most acute phase of the pandemic — particularly among middle‑aged adults.

Yet the broader picture is mixed. Other polls suggest overall alcohol consumption may be declining in some populations — such as a Gallup survey showing the lowest U.S. drinking rates in nearly a century — but these shifts don’t erase the sustained increases seen in specific groups and risk behaviors.

Public health experts frame this pattern as more than a statistical quirk. For some, alcohol became a way to cope with isolation, stress or changed routines during lockdowns; for others, it simply became a habit woven into the fabric of daily life. The persistence of these habits raises questions about long‑term health outcomes, the role of stress in substance use, and public strategies for addressing risks tied to alcohol consumption.

Whether through community programs like Dry January or broader health messaging about moderation and alcohol‑related risks, there are signs that people are thinking critically about their relationship with drinking. But for many individuals, what started as a pandemic‑era coping mechanism still resonates in 2026.
