Former Irish president Mary McAleese says she remembers Queen Elizabeth II having a very low opinion of Ian Paisley. Speaking on The Ireland Podcast, McAleese recounted a car journey in Belgium in November 1998 with the Queen and King Albert II’s family to open the Island of Ireland peace park. She said the conversation turned to hurling and then to Paisley, who had rejected the Good Friday Agreement. McAleese added that Elizabeth “abhorred him and his politics” and was “scathing” about him.
