Norwich, United Kingdom— A head-on collision on the A47 near Dereham at 3:25 p.m. Monday killed both drivers and left wreckage scattered across both carriageways, forcing police to close the route into the evening.
The crash involved a white Audi estate and a black Vauxhall saloon. Preliminary evidence shows the Audi crossed the center line on a slight left-hand bend and struck the oncoming Vauxhall at full speed. Both vehicles spun and came to rest in the verge. Both drivers died at the scene.
Norfolk Police said the Audi driver was a 41-year-old man from Norwich and the Vauxhall driver was a 56-year-old woman from Swaffham. No passengers were in either car. Their families have been notified.
"I was behind the Vauxhall. The Audi came across fast, no braking. The bang was massive," said a lorry driver who stopped and attempted to give first aid before paramedics arrived. He said visibility was clear and the road surface was dry.
Fire crews cut open both cars to extract the drivers. Paramedics attempted resuscitation but injuries were unsurvivable. The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed two fatalities on site.
The A47 was closed for five and a half hours. Collision investigators mapped tire marks, fluid trails, and impact points using laser scanners. They recovered dashcam units from both vehicles for download.
"The road is straight there but the bend before is deceptive. We are looking at speed, distraction, and whether an overtake went wrong," Sgt. Richard Lowe of Norfolk Roads Policing said. He appealed for any footage from drivers who were on the road between 3:15 and 3:35 p.m.
The A47 has a history of fatal head-on collisions. Safety campaigners have demanded a central barrier along that section. National Highways said a safety review was already scheduled for next year.
A floral tribute was laid at the roadside overnight. The coroner will open inquests later this week after post-mortem examinations.
The road reopened at 9:10 p.m. after recovery trucks removed the vehicles and highway crews repaired barrier damage.
