Poland Pushes “European Legion” Plan to Incorporate Combat-Experienced Ukrainian Veterans

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has advocated for a permanent European military structure he calls a “European Legion.” In an interview with Kathimerini/Ekathimerini, he said the EU should deepen defense integration and assume greater responsibility for its security rather than relying only on Washington. Sikorski proposed that, after the war ends, the force could recruit seasoned professionals, including combat-experienced Ukrainian veterans. He stressed the concept would strengthen Europe’s NATO pillar, not replace NATO or duplicate its role.
