Poland Criticizes Head of Ukrainian State History Institute for Downplaying WWII Massacres

Poland's government officials have taken a stand against Volodymyr Viatrovych, the head of Ukraine's state history institute, after he made statements perceived as downplaying the scale of massacres inflicted during World War II, particularly those targeting Polish citizens. In remarks made at a recent seminar, Viatrovych suggested that the losses suffered by Polish communities were exaggerated and called for a more reconciliatory view of the complex history between Poland and Ukraine.

The response from Polish leaders was swift, with Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński accusing Viatrovych of promoting a biased historical narrative that undercuts the suffering of Polish victims. "History must be told honestly," Kaczyński stated, emphasising the importance of acknowledging the brutal realities instead of glossing over them for the sake of political expediency.
