Philippines Faces Ube Supply Crunch as Global Demand Soars

The Philippines has not imposed a blanket ban on ube exports, but the crop is facing severe supply constraints as worldwide demand grows. Production fell nearly 60% in 2025 to below 12,500 metric tons, affected by limited farm inputs, extreme weather, soil degradation and scarce land. Ube-based exports exceeded $3 million last year, with the United States the leading market. Growers are struggling to meet demand for the purple yam, used in desserts, drinks, baked goods and natural food coloring
