London, Canada— The car flipped and landed on its roof. A passenger died Monday in a single-vehicle rollover that closed Upper Queen Street. Police said the crash happened in the early afternoon.
The call came in just after 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Upper Queen Street and Base Line Road East. A sedan traveling northbound left the road, struck a curb and rolled. The vehicle came to rest upside down in a ditch. Debris was spread across the street.
London Police and paramedics arrived to find two people trapped. Firefighters cut the roof to reach them. The passenger, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, also in his 20s, was taken to London Health Sciences Centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The Traffic Management Unit closed Upper Queen Street for more than six hours. Officers mapped tire marks and measured distances. A drone was flown over the wreck. Police said speed appears to be a factor but they are not ruling out other causes.
"We are looking at all aspects of this collision," a London Police traffic investigator said. "That includes speed, distraction and mechanical condition. We are also asking for any dashcam video."
Residents in the area said cars often go fast on that stretch. It is a two-lane road with limited lighting. One neighbor said she heard a loud screech and then a thud. She ran out and called 911. Another said he helped direct traffic until police arrived.
The identity of the deceased was not released pending notification of next of kin. The coroner attended the scene. The vehicle was towed for a full mechanical inspection. Police said the driver will be interviewed once medically cleared.
Upper Queen Street is a key connector for south London. The closure caused backups on nearby routes. City crews cleared fluid spill from the road before reopening.
Police continue to appeal for witnesses. The investigation is ongoing.
