Paris in Flames: Chaos Erupts on French Streets as Violent Riots Surge

PARIS — Violent clashes erupted across the French capital as nationwide protests over underfunded schools and harsh policing escalated into major urban unrest. Police fired tear gas and deployed heavy riot equipment at iconic hubs, including Place de la République and Place de la Nation, as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets.

What began as a student-led movement demanding better learning conditions and increased school resources transformed into chaotic street battles. Protesters dragged wheelie bins, metal barriers, and shopping carts into intersection roadways, igniting makeshift barricades across high-density corridors.

Riot police responded with salvos of tear gas, stun grenades, and water cannons as groups of masked demonstrators hurled projectiles and e-scooters. Main thoroughfares were brought to a complete standstill, with smoke billowing past storefronts and historic monuments.

As clashes intensified, authorities confirmed that dozens of security personnel and scores of demonstrators suffered injuries. In response to the unrest, Interior Ministry officials reported nearly 500 detentions nationwide, with dozens taken into custody in Paris alone. The turmoil heavily impacted the education sector, forcing emergency closures, blockades, or severe disruptions across hundreds of lycées and over 40% of higher education institutions. Addressing the crisis, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu denounced the "ultra-violence" and asserted there would be no tolerance for lawlessness on the streets.

Civil rights organizations have expressed growing alarm over the intensity of the police response, citing excessive force against young demonstrators. Meanwhile, political leaders across the spectrum remain sharply divided over the government’s handling of the crisis as protest organizers call for continued nationwide mobilizations.

With public transport networks crippled and municipal cleaning crews struggling to clear burned-out debris, local businesses across major French cities are bracing for substantial financial losses. Economic analysts warn that prolonged civil unrest could severely impact tourism, retail, and local commerce during an already fragile economic period, prompting business associations to demand immediate government aid and heightened protection for commercial districts ahead of planned weekend demonstrations.
