Orphanage Under Siege: 23 Pupils Abducted as Gunmen Raid Kogi Care Center

LOKOJA — In a daring and heart-wrenching assault that has left the nation in shock, heavily armed gunmen stormed the God’s Will Orphanage in the early hours of Monday, April 27, 2026. The attackers successfully abducted 23 pupils, vanishing into the dense forests of Kogi State before security forces could intervene.

The attack reportedly began around 2:00 a.m. local time. Witnesses and staff members described a scene of pure terror as dozens of gunmen arrived on motorcycles, shooting sporadically into the air to disorient the facility’s security guards.

According to the orphanage coordinator, the assailants spent nearly forty minutes on the premises. They methodically moved through the dormitories, handpicking children—some as young as six years old—and forced them into waiting vehicles and onto motorcycles.

"They didn't want money from us; they just wanted the children," one traumatized staff member shared. "They were organized, fast, and completely indifferent to the cries of the little ones."

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the abduction and launched a massive search-and-rescue operation. Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, stated that a joint task force consisting of the police, the Nigerian Army, and local hunters is currently combing the surrounding bushes and known criminal hideouts.

Significant security gaps have also been identified, as the orphanage’s remote location on the outskirts of Lokoja was protected by only two unarmed watchmen and minimal perimeter fencing. While no formal demands have been issued, authorities believe the raid’s pattern aligns with the "mass kidnapping for ransom" tactics that have recently surged across the region.

The kidnapping of vulnerable orphans has sparked widespread condemnation across Nigeria. Civil society groups and child advocacy organizations are demanding more than just "thoughts and prayers," calling for a permanent security presence at all care homes and boarding schools in high-risk zones.
