Hungary’s government reportedly used public funds to cultivate foreign influencers, researchers and conservative political figures through the Danube Institute and related organizations. Contracts obtained through freedom-of-information requests show payments totaling hundreds of thousands of euros between 2022 and 2024. Recipients were expected to publish articles, attend conferences, appear in media and build international contacts. Critics say the program promoted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s political message abroad while disguising influence efforts as research grants and cultural exchanges.
