One Morning, Two Disruptions, and a Bay Area Stretched Thin

Thursday morning began with the familiar rhythm of commuters crossing the San Francisco Bay, but the flow of traffic quickly became unusually difficult. Crashes on the San Mateo Bridge pushed additional vehicles toward the Bay Bridge, while an underground electrical incident in San Francisco's Financial District closed important downtown streets. For many commuters, separate disruptions on both sides of the bay combined into one long and complicated morning.

The California Highway Patrol reported two early-morning crashes on the San Mateo Bridge. The incidents affected traffic patterns and contributed to additional congestion on the Bay Bridge as commuters sought alternative routes. Reports from the Bay Area described severe delays during the morning commute, with some drivers saying their trips across the bridge stretched for hours.

At roughly the same time, San Francisco firefighters were responding to smoke coming from underground electrical vaults near California and Front streets. The San Francisco Fire Department said crews were called shortly after 6 a.m. to the 100 to 200 blocks of California Street after reports of smoke from several nearby vaults. The immediate area was evacuated as emergency crews assessed the situation.

The incident developed beyond a single underground chamber. Later updates from the San Francisco Fire Department reported that multiple underground vaults experienced eruptions, with the affected area expanding to include the 100 to 300 blocks of California and Front streets. Firefighters, police and PG&E crews worked together under a unified command while additional electrical infrastructure was shut down to make the scene safer.

The underground vaults contain electrical equipment that is essential to the city's dense downtown infrastructure. Because firefighters cannot simply approach an electrical fire in the same way they might handle an ordinary street-level blaze, PG&E crews were needed to help isolate and shut down parts of the system. Officials emphasized the importance of coordinating the electrical shutdown before firefighters could safely continue their work.

The incident also prompted a shelter-in-place order for nearby blocks. A power outage was associated with the event, and PG&E crews were on scene assisting emergency responders. Early reports said no injuries had been reported. Authorities urged people to avoid the affected area while crews worked to secure the streets and underground infrastructure.

The disruption was particularly noticeable because the Financial District is closely connected to the region's transportation network. When downtown streets were closed during the morning commute, the effect extended beyond the immediate fire area. Combined with the San Mateo Bridge crashes, the closures helped produce a difficult chain of delays across major routes serving commuters traveling around the bay.

Officials continued investigating the cause of the electrical incident. Early reporting noted that the cause had not initially been established, while later reporting cited PG&E's assessment of an underground cable issue. Fire officials also noted that vault incidents can involve equipment problems or other material inside underground infrastructure. There were no reported injuries connected to the incident in the initial reports.

By the time emergency crews began reopening affected areas, the morning's disruption had already demonstrated how closely transportation and underground infrastructure are connected in a dense urban region. A crash on one bridge and an electrical emergency several miles away can become part of the same commuter experience, reminding the city that its busiest systems often depend on many separate pieces working quietly at once.
