On a Morning Meant for Remembrance, Another Loss Arrives

Some mornings carry the weight of history, and some mornings break beneath it. On the lands of Tsawwassen First Nation in British Columbia, a community walk for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was underway. People wore orange. A house post was waiting to be unveiled. Then a vehicle entered the crowd. Two lives ended, two more were carried to hospital, and a morning meant for remembrance became another grief to remember.

The collision happened around 10:25 a.m. in the parking lot of Tsawwassen Mills, south of Vancouver near the U.S.-Canada border. Delta Police said a vehicle struck four pedestrians. Two died from their injuries, and the remaining two were treated at the scene and transported to hospital. Preliminary information suggested the driver may have experienced a medical emergency before the collision. Police said there was no ongoing risk to public safety.

Authorities were careful to separate the tragedy from the event taking place nearby. The incident does not appear to be related to the Truth and Reconciliation Day walk on Tsawwassen First Nation lands, police said. The nation had planned a community walk followed by the unveiling of a house post in honor of the day. Participants were encouraged to wear orange. Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson attended the walk; his spokesperson said he and his team were not near the incident and were not injured.

The emergency response was substantial. CBC reporters on the ground described more than a dozen ambulances, additional emergency vehicles, and two helicopters circling overhead. About 100 Tsawwassen First Nation members had gathered on the east side of the mall, some lying on the ground. Police cordoned off the area with yellow tape and asked the public to avoid roads leading to the B.C. Ferries terminal, one of the two main hubs connecting the mainland to Vancouver Island.

For Tsawwassen First Nation, the day was meant to be one of memory and gathering. The nation has 491 members, about half living on reserve and others in nearby areas, including Bellingham, Washington. Canada has marked the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation since 2021, a holiday coinciding with Orange Shirt Day, which honors children who never returned from residential schools. Now the community must carry a new sorrow alongside that older one.
