Norte Fire Sweeps Through San Juan Capistrano, Burning Multiple Houses

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, California — Driven by ferocious Santa Ana winds and bone-dry vegetation, the fast-moving Norte Fire tore through hillsides along the border of San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente, damaging or destroying at least six homes and forcing thousands of residents to flee.

The wildfire ignited shortly after 11:30 a.m. near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte in San Clemente. Emboldened by strong wind gusts and low humidity, the brush fire ballooned to over 570 acres within hours, pushing northward into residential neighborhoods off Via La Mirada in San Juan Capistrano.

As thick smoke filled the air and flames encroached on nearby properties, local authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for multiple zones in both San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente. Emergency management officials urged roughly 16,000 residents across 6,000 homes to evacuate immediately.

The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), alongside state and regional partner agencies, deployed dozens of ground crews, water-dropping helicopters, and fixed-wing air tankers releasing retardant lines to defend homes along the perimeter. Despite intense firefighting efforts, flames consumed several residential structures, leaving scorched foundations and charred vehicles in their wake. Two firefighters were hospitalized with injuries sustained during the initial attack and are currently in stable condition.

Evacuation shelters were rapidly established at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center and the San Clemente Community Center to accommodate displaced families and pets. Meanwhile, California state officials secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) through FEMA to aid local suppression and recovery operations.

Fire crews remain on scene working to douse hotspots, secure containment lines, and clear hazardous debris before allowing residents back into affected zones. The exact cause of the ignition remains under official investigation.
