Belfast, Northern Ireland— One person suffered a traumatic head injury after a violent street altercation outside a night establishment in Belfast on October 22, 2026.
The incident happened at 1:20 a.m. on a busy entertainment street in the city center. Police said two groups who had been inside a nightclub argued outside after being ejected by door staff. The argument escalated. One man was punched, fell backward, and struck his head on the pavement. He did not get up.
Door staff called emergency services. Other clubbers tried to help and placed jackets under the victim’s head. Blood pooled on the footpath. The suspect group fled toward Royal Avenue before police arrived.
PSNI and ambulance crews arrived in eight minutes. They found a man in his late 20s unconscious with a severe head wound and bleeding from the ear. Paramedics stabilized his neck and took him to the Royal Victoria Hospital’s trauma unit. Doctors said he has a skull fracture and brain bleeding and is in critical condition in intensive care.
“This was a single punch that caused devastating consequences. The victim hit the ground hard and suffered a serious brain injury,” said a PSNI detective. “We are treating this as grievous bodily harm.”
Officers sealed 30 meters of pavement with tape. Forensic teams photographed blood and seized CCTV from the nightclub and two nearby bars. Door staff have given statements. No weapon was involved, but police said the force of the fall caused the injury.
The nightclub said it ejected both groups for aggressive behavior inside and that its staff acted quickly outside. One witness said, “It was shouting, then one punch, then silence. Everyone stopped dancing and just stared.”
PSNI have appealed for anyone who was in the area between 1 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. to come forward, particularly anyone with phone footage. They are looking for a man in his 20s, medium build, wearing a light-colored shirt, last seen running east.
The street reopened at 4 a.m. No arrests have been made. The investigation continues. The victim’s family has been notified and is at his bedside.
