Janine Lochrenberg swam every morning, and the ocean was her happy place.

There is a particular cruelty in a death that arrives during a morning swim, in water that has been entered a thousand times before, in the company of friends who have shared the same ritual for years. Janine Lochrenberg was sixty-five years old, a retired medical physicist, a musician, a partner, a sister, a mother. She swam every morning with her open water club off Orient Beach in KuGompo City, South Africa, a stretch of coastline she knew well enough to have made peace with its risks. On Tuesday, a shark attacked her. She died before she reached the shore.

The details are difficult to hold. Lochrenberg was bitten on her thigh and upper arm, according to fellow swimmers. She was wearing a magnetic shark repellent band on her ankle, a device designed to distort a shark's electroreception and deter an attack . The band did not prevent the shark from biting her. Her sister Margot, who was in the water with her, held her head as other swimmers carried her toward the beach. Margot believed her sister bled out in the water before they could get her out .

Mike Loewe, a friend and fellow swimmer, was several meters behind the group when he saw the splashing. He described the desperate effort to bring her to shore. "She was in desperate shock," he said. "Myself and one of our strongest swimmers, we cradled her and had to hold her head, and then we tried our best to swim to shore" . Lochrenberg's son, a deaf Olympian swimmer, raced into the surf when they neared the beach and took his mother from them. A paramedic in the group attempted resuscitation. She was declared dead at the scene.

Lochrenberg was a quiet presence in her community, someone who did not seek attention but contributed steadily. The East London Open Water Swimming Group remembered her as "never one to seek the spotlight, preferring to quietly go about doing what she loved most—swimming in the ocean" . Her partner, Barbara Briceland, described her as "highly intelligent, lots of fun, kind, in a quietish way, thoughtful, well-loved with a love of life." The couple was preparing for a three-week road trip to celebrate their retirement .

Her sister said Lochrenberg had known about the elevated shark presence in the area. "She'd made peace with that," Margot told the BBC. "She had a deep affinity with the water and was a remarkable person" . This is not a story about someone who ignored danger. It is a story about someone who understood it and chose the water anyway, because the water was where she found joy.

Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach have been closed. The attack was the first recorded fatal shark incident in South Africa this year . Scientists believe the shark may have been a great white, though the species has not been confirmed . The investigation continues, as investigations do, while a community mourns a woman who swam among them every morning and did not return.
