New Zealand blocks lawsuits against firms over climate harm

New Zealand’s Parliament has passed legislation blocking current and future civil claims against companies for climate damage caused by greenhouse-gas emissions. The law ends a major lawsuit brought by Māori activist Mike Smith against six large businesses, including Fonterra, Genesis Energy and Z Energy. Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith said climate policy should be handled nationally rather than through courts, giving businesses greater certainty. Environmental groups condemned the measure, arguing it removes an important accountability route while the climate crisis continues to worsen.
