New Famine Risk Haunts War-Torn Sudan as El Niño-Driven Drought Depletes Food Stocks

A new food-security alert warns that war and El Niño-driven drought are pushing parts of Sudan, especially Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan, closer to famine. In two displacement camps in South Darfur, child acute malnutrition exceeded famine thresholds, while aid agencies report depleted food stocks, poor harvest prospects and rising prices. More than 300,000 people have been displaced in Greater Kordofan since October 2025. Humanitarian groups say insecurity, restricted access and inadequate funding are preventing assistance from keeping pace with urgent needs.
