New EU rules for durable, energy-efficient and repairable smartphones and tablets start applying

New EU ecodesign and energy-labelling rules now apply to smartphones, cordless phones and slate tablets placed on the market. Devices must withstand drops, use batteries retaining at least 80% capacity after 800 charging cycles, and remain repairable with spare parts available for up to seven years. Manufacturers must provide operating-system updates for at least five years. Labels show energy efficiency, battery life, durability, water and dust protection, and a repairability score. The measures aim to reduce waste and save money.
