The Democratic Republic of Congo says suspected Ebola cases have been reported in a new province, underscoring the continued expansion of the outbreak as deaths reached 600.
The government’s latest situation report, published late Wednesday night, said the outbreak declared on May 15 has infected 1,759 people across the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. The figures did not include two cases in Kisangani, the capital of Tshopo province, which officials said are part of the broader picture but still being validated.
One of the Kisangani cases was linked to the health zone of Niania in Ituri, where the first cases were reported. A second Kisangani case, the report said, “does not appear to have a geographic link” beyond the city.
Officials said the positive results are still being confirmed through additional testing before the cases are added to the official total. In the meantime, response teams have started strengthening surveillance, contact tracing, and other containment measures in Kisangani.
The situation report also said that in the previous 24 hours there were 51 new cases and 20 new deaths. It cited the World Health Organization’s warning that the outbreak has not stabilized and is still expanding, with transmission being fueled by population movement.
