“New Beginnings for Old Handles: Gmail Address Changes Are Coming”

Google is gradually rolling out a new feature that will allow Gmail users to change their email address — even if it ends with “@gmail.com”. But according to newly updated support documentation spotted in some regions, that old limitation is being lifted.

Under the planned system, users will be able to choose a new Gmail address while retaining the same Google Account and all associated data — including emails, photos, messages, contacts, and sign-ins across services like YouTube, Drive, Maps, and Google Play. The original Gmail address does not disappear; instead, it becomes an alias, meaning both the old and new addresses continue to work and deliver mail to the same inbox.

There are notable conditions. Once an account’s Gmail address is changed:

You cannot change or delete the new address for 12 months. Each account is limited to a few address changes overall — generally up to three over its lifetime. You also cannot create a new account with your old address for at least 12 months after the change. The feature is being rolled out gradually and may not yet appear in everyone’s settings, so some users will need to wait before they can use it. Early indications suggest it may first reach users in certain markets before becoming widespread.

Many long-time Gmail users hope this update will be a welcome identity refresh — allowing them to ditch outdated or embarrassing email handles without losing years of accumulated correspondence and linked accounts. It’s a shift that recognizes how personal email addresses have become intertwined with our digital lives, and how hard it has been to change them until now.

After more than two decades of treating Gmail addresses as effectively permanent, Google’s new address-change option promises greater flexibility and control for users — without forcing them to start fresh with a new account. As the feature rolls out in early 2026, email users who have long grimaced at their old handles may finally have a more graceful exit from the digital names they grew out of, without sacrificing the history and data tied to them.
